PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Iran today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote cooperation in areas of common interest in education.

The MoU was signed by Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Iran's Minister of Education Dr Hamid Reza Babaei here.

The Ministry of Education said in a statement the MoU paved the way for Malaysia and Iran to enhance the existing cordial relationship, especially in the field of education.

It included collaboration in school/institution linkages; science and mathematics; information and communication technology (ICT); and sport, culture and music, the statement said.

The MoU would also explore collaboration in teacher training and professional development, quality assurance in education, and technical and vocational education, it added.

The idea of signing an MoU in the field of education was mooted during a Malaysian technical mission to Iran on April 15, 2008 headed by Education Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Zulkurnain Awang, the statement said.

It said that during the mission, both parties expressed the desire to explore the possibilities of establishing a more formal network through the signing of the MoU.

The draft of the MoU was approved by the Cabinet in April last year.

The statement said suggested collaboration to be pursued further to the signing of the MoU was the exchange of expertise through the fields of science and mathematics, ICT, teacher training, and leadership administration and management for school administrators. - BERNAMA
