SEVEN former pupils of SK Teluk Lipat, Endau, were touched when Mersing member of parliament Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad presented each of them with a laptop for outstanding results in last year's Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR).
The laptops were a personal contribution from Dr Latiff, who is also Deputy Defence Minister.
He presented the laptops to the pupils at their homes houses in Kampung Semanyir, Teluk Lipat and Belukar Juling, Endau, recently.
Dr Latiff had promised them laptops if they did well well in the examination. The seven obtained 5As each in the UPSR.
"This is to encourage and motivate the pupils of SK Teluk Lipat, which is a rural school. The school had previously recorded moderate examination results compared to urban schools.
"It is hoped the laptops will motivate others in the school to do well in the future," said Dr Latiff.
He has offered the same incentive to the school's pupils this year, but only if the school scored better results.
"If there is a chance, I will expand this programme to other rural schools in the district. I hope the recipients will put their laptops to good use."
Nuradnin Mahmod, 13, was happy the deputy minister had fulfilled his promise.
"I am grateful for the contribution and it will allow me to access information online for use for my studies, " said Nuradnin, who now attends the Rancangan Khas (special programme) class at SMK Ungku Husin.
Rancangan Khas classes are common in secondary schools in Johor and several other states.
Fakrudin Hamdan, 13, whose ambition is to become a doctor, plans to do more research with the help of the laptop.
"There is so much information I can obtain with this laptop, and it will help me a lot in my research paper," he said. -- By Ikhwan Muhammad
